Vanaf 1 September 2011 geldt voor commercials, promo's en stationcalls* de nieuwe luidheidsnorm R-128. Er is veel onduidelijkheid over deze nieuwe norm.

•  Alle commercials, promo's en stationcalls worden vanaf 1 September 2011 zachter uitgezonden. Allemaal! En behoorlijk veel zachter ook (ong. 7 dB), zodat de kijker/luisteraar niet meer naar zijn afstandsbediening hoeft te grijpen bij het eerste de beste reclame- of promoblok.
•  De nieuwe R-128 norm is fundamenteel anders dan de oude PPM-norm. Vroeger mochten we op elk moment zo-hard-als-we-wilden (-9 dBFS), nu geldt: ben je te hard, dan wordt je automatisch zachter gemaakt. Beschouw de commercial als een emmertje. Je gooit er geluid in net zolang totdat hij overloopt, waarna de hele commercial zachter wordt gemaakt.
•  Het verschil in luidheid tussen de oude commercials en de nieuwe commercials is minimaal; oude commercials zijn niet significant zachter of doffer dan nieuwe. Nieuwe commercials kunnen daarentegen wel veel dynamischer worden, dat wil zeggen: het verschil tussen hard en zacht zal binnen één commercial toenemen.

Voor ons sounddesigners en geluidstechnici/mixers is het een fantastische ontwikkeling. Plotseling is onze creatieve werkruimte meer dan verdubbeld. Deze nieuwe standaard stelt ons in staat veel filmischer te werken, waar nodig (harde) accenten te plaatsen en geluid in zijn algemeenheid veeeel mooier te laten klinken dan voorheen.

Natuurlijk zitten er aan R-128 nog een aantal (technische) haken en ogen, maar deze vallen buiten het kader van deze korte uitleg. En het zal zeker spannend worden 1 September! Maar de bottomline is: wij zijn er oprecht blij mee, en 100% van overtuigd dat dit de geluidsbeleving zeer ten goede zal komen.

* De nieuwe norm geldt voorlopig alleen voor commercials, promo's en stationcalls. Het is de bedoeling dat ook alle reguliere t.v. uitzendingen per 1 Januari 2012 overgaan op deze nieuwe norm.
